NCS The Challenge, a great day of learning for all!
We had the absolute pleasure of working with a group from NCS The Challenge again this Summer, training them up to assist in delivering a Totally Hooked session at Alvechurch Fisheries. NCS offers 15 to 17 year olds the opportunity to try new things, learn new skills and meet new people. As well as the personal development each young person can achieve, NCS The Challenge also encourages them to make a positive impact socially, this is where the partnership with Angling Unlimited comes in!
After receiving their training in the technical aspects of fishing and Angling Unlimited's approach and values, the group were set the challenge of supporting our qualified coaches to deliver a fishing session for a group of adults with visual impairment. The participants for the session were all from Birmingham Vision who have been to a Totally Hooked session before...and they had a trick up their sleeves for the NCS Group! As well as learning from the young people, our Birmingham Vision group educated the NCS group on visual impairment by offering each a blind-fold to get a taste of what it's like to carry out even simple activities with sight loss. This helped our NCS volunteers gain a greater insight on the impact of visual impairment which then helped to improve their delivery of the session.
Through learning from each other, great rapport was built between the groups and the benefits of the day were felt by both. As Pete, our Project Coordinator, put it: "a wonderful experience for all involved, a great day that everyone was proud of!"
